Wall Preparation Please read carefully
1. Remove old wallpaper and clean surface with strong household cleaner to remove fungus and mold. (Do not use bleach or cleanser containing sodium hypochlorite.) Rinse wall surface thoroughly.
2. Check walls for soundness and painted surfaces for paint adhesion.
3. Fill large cracks with spackling.
4. Rough surfaces such as concrete, block, etc., should be cross lined before installing wallcoverings.
5. Apply a water-based acrylic wallpaper primer to wall surface: "Shieldz" or an equivalent product for porous walls (i.e. latex paint, cured new plaster, new dry wall, concrete). "Zinsser Z-54" or an equivalent for non-porous walls (i.e. oil painted surfaces, paneling, varnished wood). If unsure of wall surface, use "Zinsser Z-54". If "Zinsser" is unavailable, use any water based acrylic primer specifically designed to go under wallpaper. Important: Wallcovering will not adhere to oil-based surfaces. Always cover any oil-based surface with a water-based primer.
6. Allow the wall surface to dry thoroughly between each step.
7. If papering walls and ceilings, do ceilings first.
Hanging Instructions
1. Plan your project so that the first and last strips meet in the most inconspicuous place. Establish a plumb line.
2. With a paint roller or brush, apply an even coat of "clay-based" paste to the cut wallpaper strip, making certain the paste fills in the emboss completely.
3. Loosely fold the strip paste side to paste side, allowing the paste to soak into the product for 10 minutes. Never soak wallcovering in or with water.
4. Being careful not to stretch the wallpaper strip, smooth it into place with a soft wallpaper brush, matching the pattern and butt joining the seams. Do not roll seams.
5. Trim the top and bottom with a straight edge and sharp blade. Gently remove excess paste with a dry cloth, being careful not to flatten relief.
6. 24 hours after installation, lightly spackle the seams with fingers, if necessary. Do not be alarmed if the wallpaper looks less than magnificent prior to painting. Small gaps and holes will disappear once painted.
7. Apply two coats of low luster or semi-gloss latex paint. [An oil-based (alkyd) paint may be substituted for the second coat if such a finish is desired-be sure the first coat is a latex paint.] Wallcovering must be painted (two coats) to protect its surface and to allow for easy cleaning.
This product lends itself well to all types of faux paint finishes.
